Julia Serano in Chicago (well, Evanston)

I can’t believe it’s been months now since I finished reading Whipping Girl by Julia Serano and I haven’t blogged about it yet.  If you consider yourself to be an ally to trans people, you must read this book!  If you care about feminism, read this book!  If you just want a very readable, interesting piece of non fiction, pick up Whipping Girl today.

Serano debunks many of the myths and misconceptions that people have about trans women and fiercely challenges trans misogony- the ways in which trans women are targeted not only as trans but also as women.  She gave me a new language for understanding gendered oppression and I am totally totally grateful to her sharp analysis on the ways in which femme phobia operates in our own queer communities.

And…

Serano will be giving at talk this Thursday at Northwestern.  Click here for more details.  But, alas, I won’t be able to hear it because I’ll be here, providing quality sex toys and education without fail.  So if for whatever reason you don’t go to the talk, you should at least come and buy something yummy from me so I won’t be sacrificing for nothing.

xo,

Lee
