Apparently, the UK’s Channel 4 Education has forked over a chunk of change for the development of a video game that educates its players about STIs. Geared toward young men,
the game will take a light hearted approach to advice on sexually transmitted infections and teenage pregnancy… will be a “spoof on the Space Marine genre”, in which players enter a young man’s privates to shoot down infections.
Now, on the one hand, I’m glad that any attention is being paid to the sex education of young people, and in their own language… sorta. But I’ll echo Debbie Herbenick’s concern that this seems like it’s shaping up to be just like, oh I don’t know, Space Invaders (am I dating myself here?), and could be easily divorced from its true purpose with no information absorbed at all. Of course, we’ll have to wait for its unveiling in 2010 to be sure.
