Finding a sex positive doctor

While we’re talking about pap smears (and who should buy one for whom), it seemed appropriate to bring up something actually useful — how to find a doctor with whom you’re not afraid to talk about sex.  Or, if you’re not afraid to bring it up, per se, how to find a doctor who will answer you with accurate, useful, non-judgmental information. We are incredibly lucky here in Chicago to have the Chicago Women’s Health Center — but one should be able to talk to one’s primary care doc as well. Personally, I think the folks at CWHC should train Chicago’s doctors in sex positivity… but that’s just me.

Luckily, Violet Blue has some AWESOME advice for you. Check out her column in the SF Gate. In the article, she interviews two docs on their advice, and they offer good tips for finding as well as communicating with your doctor about sex. Says one of the doctors:

Everyone deserves to have access to sex-positive health care. It is not only needed by those who identify as LGBT, poly, or kinky. Heterosexual, monogamous, vanilla people also deserve sex-positive doctors and a safe place to bring their whole selves, including their sexual concerns.

Amen to that. Read the article. Pass it on.
