MTV and Foursquare are joining forces to encourage STI testing! I love it when mainstream media uses its power for good, and tapping into the location-tracking social networking tool is a creative way to reach MTV’s young target audience. When people who follow MTV on Foursquare check into a clinic and tell their friends to get tested they get a GYT (get yourself tested) badge. Kind of like a social media version of the “Responsibility is Sexy” stickers we handed out to newly-tested students when I was in college. The goal is to normalize STD testing by making it a responsible action to be proud of. I hope this initiative, in combination with organizations like ICAH and Amplify, empowers young people (and not so young people) to value their sexual health, access good information and services, and spread the trend of healthy sexy bodies.
