Not a Typical Girl: Ari Up

Ari Up (Arianna Foster), front woman of British punk band, The Slits, passed away earlier this week. The Slits, formed in 1976 by a 14 year old Ari and drummer Palmolive (Paloma Romero, who later joined the Raincoats) has been a strong inspiration for the riot grrrl movement. Their debut album, Cut, is still one of my favorite records of all time. It is playful, full of life and smart commentary on female gender roles and sexuality.

Its hard to imagine Ari Up resting in peace. In my mind she will forever be frenetically rocking out, wailing in that birdlike voice, and doing it all in her own wacked out style.
