Just in case you hadn’t noticed, we have finally started an affiliate program! We are extremely excited to be working with awesome sex-positive bloggers, so we’ll be introducing them to you and sharing some interesting things they are writing about.
First up is Fuck Yeah Menfolk. Awesome name, right? Also awesome content: Fuck Yeah Menfolk explores the many forms masculinity takes. Most of the entries are written from a straight cis-man perspective, but promote lgbtq acceptance and sex positivity, while exploring a wide range of gender issues. For Halloween, I found this comic on the Menfolk blog…
This ties into the ongoing conversation around objectification and women’s Halloween costumes, but it particularly reminds me of a conversation I had with my beau yesterday. We were wandering around a thrift shop in search of clothing for our Halloween costumes, when he picked up a tiny pair of soccer shorts and half-jokingly said, “Honey, why don’t you be a sexy soccer player for Halloween?” I responded that if I were to be a soccer player for Halloween, I would not be a sexy-soccer player. I would just be a soccer player, but it would undoubtedly be sexy because I am sexy.
To me, the main problem with the sexy-blank costume is that the sexy part is built in. It gives us a formula for what sexy is instead of allowing us to define that for ourselves. One of the most powerful things we can do is define and represent our own sexuality. If we do choose to sexualize ourselves on Halloween (or ever) it becomes an act of freedom when we use our own definition of sexuality instead of buying an outfit in a bag with the words “sexy blank” on it.
