Help Bring Comprehensive Sex Ed to Illinois Youth

A while ago I posted about the Illinois Personal Responsibility Education Program Act (PREP) that will bring age-appropriate medically accurate comprehensive sexuality education to Illinois public schools to help our youth have healthy and fulfilling sexual lives. Comprehensive sexuality education is an essential component of reproductive justice.

This week we became one step closer to obtaining this type of education in our schools when the Illinois senate narrowly (30-28) voted to pass the bill. Now the bill has moved to the house, so we need to contact our representatives and ask them to vote “yes” on HB 3027 ammendments #1 & #3. Amendment #1 is the substantive language that lays out the requirements for sex education. Amendment #3 is a technical amendment that corrects a drafting error.

The Illinois House is scheduled to be in every day through the end of the month, and we need to keep the calls and emails coming until then. Emails to representatives should ask:

Please vote YES on a motion to concur with Senate Amendments #1 and #3 to HB 3027. Support medically accurate, age-appropriate, and complete sex education!

Since the long message is hard to remember, you can use this shorter message when you are having people make phone calls:

Please vote YES on HB 3027. Support sex ed

  • This sounds great, good luck! We need to get more information out there. Right now, only 13 states require that sex education be medically accurate, which blows my mind. Let's take a step towards 14?
